Our Primary Teaching Courses

Our SCITT routes into teaching are school-led training courses which gives you the chance to learn the job ‘on the job’ in a school. You work as part of the teaching team from day one learning from experienced, highly skilled colleagues and immediately put your new skills into practice.

The SCITT programme will allow successful trainees to achieve Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)

Primary - General. Course code -2YRV

Primary – General (Age Range 5 - 11) Our Primary programme is focussed on the study of teaching students between the ages of 5 and 11 years in all National Curriculum subjects, with particular emphasis on English, Mathematics, Science and ICT. You will learn the principles of curriculum design, planning and delivery, theories of learning and teaching pedagogy alongside developing practical insights and skills in the effective teaching and assessment of young children.

You will be offered a series of learning experiences linking different perspectives of primary teaching to the development of your professional skills and subject knowledge in the classroom. This will give you the opportunity to select a specialism. You will teach and qualify for the 5 - 11 age range but will also experience short Early Years Foundation Stage and KS3 placements as well.

This course will allow you to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). QTS is awarded by Haybridge SCITT. We deliver a spiral taught curriculum which supports you to develop the knowledge, skills and experiences to meet the requirements of the course by the end of your training. The PGCE is awarded by Bath Spa University upon successful completion of 2 assignments. You will spend the majority of your time on the course within your placement schools, supported by subject and phase experts. Trainees will also benefit from the Central Education Programme Pedagogy sessions that are led by a Subject and Phase Specialists.

How Placements Work

Our trust and partner schools cover the Dudley area and diversity of social, economic and cultural backgrounds, ranging from city and suburban settings. High quality partnership schools are selected for trainees according to their training requirements. We match placements carefully ensuring trainees gain a range of experience in different schools and settings building on their prior knowledge and experience. All partner schools have experienced, expert and trained mentors. You should be prepared to travel up to 30 minutes each way from where you live. Your placement schools will ensure that you have a breadth of experience across the different age phases in which you are training. You will have a gradual introduction to teaching, observing, getting to know your pupils, classes and teachers, before beginning your independent teaching. Teaching commitments will increase throughout the course at a sustainable rate to ensure you have the key knowledge, skills and experiences required to be able to meet the course requirements by the end of your training. You will gain experience of working with a school lead mentor as well as a placement mentor in each of your placement schools. Your mentor will meet with you regularly to guide and support your development during the placement. You will typically spend at least 120 days on placement in two schools. You will be attached to each school for a substantial period of time and will be expected to immerse yourself into the life of the school.
